Mini Tips

We are trying to build up a series of tips for Mini enthusiasts. If you have any hints or tips that you think might be helpful to other Mini owners, why not send us an email.

  • On Mk3 to Mk5 minis, a good tip is to relocate the coil to the bulk head (by the brake master cylinder). This will stop it getting that wet and will vastly improve reliability in damp weather. Also put a condom (unused!!) over the dizzy cap. Again this make the popular car much more reliable to use in damp weather.

  • Always carry some WD40 in your car especially when the weather is wet or damp. Use it to soak up excess moisture from around the plugs and it will help to get your Mini moving.

  • When getting torque steer on tight left hand bends don't let off the gas. I have noticed if you do the car will lose control at the rear and the front will become too light and you need quick reactions to get it back! Enter the corner just below the speed you want to exit!

  • Use modern Ford Fiesta side indicator light covers, for that smooth roundy look our Minis are loved for.

  • Whack an MG Metro turbo in your Mini and watch the boy racers ball as you leave them for dust!

  • Waxoil, waxoil, waxoil and waxoil.

  • Those of us who just love to cover our Minis in chrome bits should find this interesting. Recently whilst restoring an old 1985 Mini I found that under the matt paint on the windscreen wiper arms, they were already chrome and a light sanding revealed this.

  • When buying a Mini, always remember to lift the rear pocket cards out from above the sills and check for the standard of rust etc. I fell short of this and it was costly and more importantly unsafe!!!! You can't buy lives!!!

  • When refitting the front or rear screens, soak the rubber in a bucket of very hot water. This softens the rubber and makes a very awkward/nerve racking job much easier.
